Oaten Hay + Napier Grass

Oaten Hay Grading Guide for Malaysian Dairy Farms

Napier grass remains the backbone of many Malaysian dairy rations — it's affordable, locally available and produces plenty of fresh matter. But its feed value shifts with rainfall, cutting stage and silage handling. Blending in Australian oaten hay gives the ration a steady base: consistent fibre, more predictable intake, and rumen-friendly digestibility that holds up all year round, wet season or dry.

Grading is based roughly 70% on visual appearance (colour, leaf-to-stem ratio, smell) and 30% on lab analysis (ADF, NDF, WSC) on a dry-matter basis. Figures below are seasonal averages — individual bales may vary slightly.
Top Grade
Premium grade oaten hay

Premium

Colour >80%
ADF 26–30%
Stem 6mm
NDF 48–52%
Taste Sweet
WSC 22–28%

Brightest colour and highest sugar levels of the range — the benchmark grade for palatability.

Premium
Premium 1 grade oaten hay

Premium 1

Colour >75%
ADF 28–32%
Stem 6–7mm
NDF 50–55%
Taste Sweet
WSC 20–26%

A close second to Premium, with a similarly sweet taste and smell and strong energy value.

Best for Fresh Cows
Dairy Special grade oaten hay

Dairy Special

Colour >70%
ADF 28–32%
Stem 6–7mm
NDF 52–57%
Taste Sweet
WSC 16–22%

Ideal for high-producing and fresh cows in early lactation — highest energy and best milk response.

Recommended
Dairy 1 grade oaten hay

Dairy 1

Colour >65%
ADF 29–33%
Stem 6–8mm
NDF 53–59%
Damage Slight
WSC 14–18%

The best balance of cost and performance — suited to most Malaysian dairy farms and the general milking herd.

Economy
Dairy 2 grade oaten hay

Dairy 2

Colour >55%
ADF 30–34%
Stem 7–8mm
NDF 56–62%
Damage Rain
WSC 12–16%

A more economical fibre source for late-lactation cows, dry cows and heifers, or tighter feed budgets.

Beef Grade
Beef grade oaten hay

Beef

Colour Min 45%
ADF 32–42%
Stem Max 9mm
NDF 60–68%
Damage Rain
WSC 10–14%

A practical, lower-cost fibre option suited to beef cattle rather than high-producing dairy cows.

When Napier Grass Is Good Quality

Blend roughly 70–85% Napier grass/silage with 15–30% oaten hay. Dairy 1 suits the general herd, while Dairy Special is worth the upgrade for high-producing cows.

When Napier Quality Falls

During wet season, over-maturity or poor silage, lift the oaten hay share to help protect rumen health, dry matter intake and milk consistency.
